Yep, definitely a character episode. There’s not too much lore to be found in this one, though we enjoyed having a second look at Rose’s room. The twist was very interesting; of course we had no reason to fear another bog-standard plotline.
This was only the second episode without any of the other Crystal Gems in it, so we’ll be waiting for Shirt Club and Story For Steven to see whether Garnet’s outfit will be the season-one or season-two version in the three episodes formerly a part of season one.

Wanna make heads or tails as to what Joy Ride is gonna be about? I don’t think it’ll be about stealing cars (could be possible), but something about cars? Or a long journey? I need something to go on here.

There’s no guessing unless they come out with a preview tomorrow. (Hopefully they will. I don’t know why they stopped, but they seem to have started back up again.)
I’d assume it involves the cool kids again, as they’re the most likely ones for Steven to be joy riding with.
Thoughts:
1) Love the reference to the fight with Shadow Link. Connie wore green with a pointed hood. Construct Connie had no irises.
2) Connie reminds me a lot of Pearl. Her relationship to Steven reminds me a lot of the relationship Pearl, probably partially, wanted with Rose. Incoming angst when Pearl realizes this. I really want her and Connie to become friends though. Pearl probably went through a childhood similar to Connie’s. They should bond and help each other out.
3) Oh Steven, you know that Connie is right about the ending to not-Harry Potter, but you want to believe that any expression of love can eventually make anyone’s problems go away. It is how you have made it through so far. It is how you have won so far. But you can’t save everyone…
I liked the episode. Definitely not my favorite, but I liked it. I thought it was interesting how the room knew Steven’s thoughts and emotions as well as his wants.
Also, after thinking about it some more, i wonder if Lion is a byproduct of the room. Maybe Rose created him to watch over Steven, That would explain why he’s pink.
Just to let you know, Matt Burnett has said that Garnet’s only in one episode out of the three that were meant for season 1, and that she’ll be wearing her old outfit! An unfortunate (but unavoidable) continuity error.

Ah, I found the tweet (here). Looks like for my sanity I’ll be folding these episodes back into season one mentally. Should be easy: Open Book before Rose’s Scabbard, the next before The Message, and the last before Political Power.
