GC13 goes solo to discuss Rocknaldo, why Ronaldo is not just a fantastic character but also a wonderful human being, and to beg for an episode with Ronaldo and Jamie hanging out.
There are too many funny moments in this episode to name, but the one Avatar fans will probably love the most is Ronaldo’s “that’s rough buddy” at the end. You should put that in the Ronalphlet, Ronaldo.
Tiger Philanthropist is up next week. Be there.
(Speaking of Tiger Philanthropist, how is it that Purple Puma has got so many cameos since Tiger Millionaire aired – way more than the two GC13 can remember off the cuff – yet Tiger Millionaire hasn’t been so much as hinted at?)

You seem to be the only one cutting Ronaldo any slack; the Disqus commenters over at the A.V. Club utterly loathe the character, some wanting him and Lars to die in a Gem invasion. There seem to be a lot of people who want the show to focus on the “Steven vs. Homeworld” plot and that Beach City should be background, a choice that I don’t think the show creators will follow, nor would I.

At the risk of being a hipster or a grognard (or a hipster-grognard—a grogster, if you will), the people who want the show to be all story all the time are probably newer fans from after the first Steven Bomb. There’s no way they would have made it through the first season without knowing it was all setup for a big payoff. I’ve been a fan of the show basically since it started airing, so if Beach City didn’t do it for me I’d have to be really impressed by some vague hints that something really cool happened a long time in the past.
If Ronaldo is going to hang out with any Gem it’s got to be Peridot. Not only do they both try to inflate their own egos constantly, they are both dramatic and prone to wild speculations. I like Ronaldo’s character but not him, I find him to have the greatest potential, that potential being seen at the end of this episode. As you said, it’s easy to like a character that does bad things like Pearl or Lapis because their stories frame them very sympathetically, but it’s far more interesting when a character you don’t expect to get redemption or change does so.
I’m also surprised you didn’t mention Pearl’s various nicknames for Ronaldo. Based on the conversation at the end of the episode, I think Ronaldo’s line from Crashing Skies about being an ambassador to the aliens will become true to some extent.
Finally, I know you typically are more about the lore and character speculations, but it was interesting how this episode dealt with minorities and bad allies.
