Lunar Sea Spire podcast episode 135: Gem Hunt

GC13, Sophia, and Hunter discuss an episode that it can be kind of hard to know how to feel about sometimes: Gem Hunt.

It’s an episode where important stuff happens, especially some crucial character building. However for whatever reason it just feels… Strange. It’s hard to place.

What’s easy to see, however, is how precious Pearl is in this episode. She is pearlfection incarnate, and is cute as can be. Which was your favorite Pearl line? It might be hard to pick just one.

That’s not to say that Connie wasn’t adorable as well, nor that Steven didn’t put in a good performance. There’s plenty of cute to go around.

I think we are so used to episodes being either filler or plot heavy that we forget the old days where a lot of season 1 was just going out on a mission from start to finish. Like Giant Woman or Cheeseburger Backpack. Just a start to finish mission where some other stuff happens.

    Also, it’s been a while…but here goes!!!

With the massive catalog of callbacks and parallels this show makes, I gotta admit I was a little bit hoping (and still am, looking forward) for Connie to have a “Get your hands off my Steven!” moment.
This was one of the few times that I got genuinely pissed off about Youtube’s recommended videos spoiling me on a plot point, namely Jasper coming back. And on that note, despite how great the various arcs of Season 3 are, Jasper’s whereabouts were just baffling. She gets punted into the sea and somehow shows up in Canada The Great North? And then attacks Beach City from the (Atlantic) ocean, retreating back into that ocean, only to show up again at Beta (in the Western US).
Connie’s “this was a mistake” face upon sipping her tea was great.

The one weird legacy of this episode plotwise was Steven’s “partially corrupted” theory. He’s shown, in the episode to be completely wrong about the monster they’re chasing being partially corrupted, because the human-looking footprints were actually Jasper. And yet, come “Earthlings”, he still seems to think that partial corruption is a thing that would work differently.
