Ratings for The New Crystal Gems

The move to Friday apparently hasn’t done any favors for Cartoon Network’s ratings, and the lack of advertisement specifically hasn’t helped Steven Universe any either. The New Crystal Gems was seen by 1,063,000 viewers. Here’s how Cartoon Network’s evening premiers stacked up:

  1. Teen Titans Go! at 6:00 PM with 1,174,000
  2. Steven Universe at 7:00 PM with 1,063,000
  3. Clarence at 6:30 PM with 945,000

Nah, Steven Universe is getting worse. You haven’t seen SU criticisms have you?

Honestly, people always complain whenever they have to wait for more lore, even when the wait is the result of a hiatus or scheduling oddities rather than pacing. I really think the ratings are due to the lack of advertising for the new Friday schedule, since SU’s normal premiere day has been Thursday for years now. Rose’s Scabbard was a “big” episode and the start of the first Stevenbomb, but it got low viewership because CN reused a generic 7-month-old SU commercial (with the new schedule slapped on the end when nobody was paying attention) instead of hyping it as an event.

LOL. Okay, sure. Let’s blame it on the scheduling and lack of advertising instead off the atrocious pacing, characterization, and “Mary Sue Steven.” He’s ALWAYS right after all. And the crying parts largely lack emotional impact. Fans have been fed with nothing but fillers! Usually, the Season 4 of a “successful” series would have brought us to the heart of everything (i.e. Homeworld) but nope. We get a human zoo.

Also, almost nobody cares about the Beach City residents. Why keep focusing on them if they have no shown purpose for the overall arc of SU??? Yeah, they’re humans and the S(U)crew TRIES to humanize them but they’re all actually rather forgettable. Except Onion when he wasn’t being treated like a joke.

The only reason this series still has fans is because of its “gayness”. But check it out! Even a lot of people from the LGBT community are criticizing it. SU Hate and Critical Blogs and threads are popping up! See for yourself on Tumblr and reddit.

One of the reasons why the SU Fandom is one of the worst fandoms because there’s a lot of discourse, a lot of let downs, and no lore to distract them from it.

Steven is growing to be more annoying, Garnet is always all about fusion and her character is sacrificed in order to develop Rupphire, Pearl is salty af and her angsting about Rose is so overdone nobody gives a f*ck anymore. Amethyst would’ve been done right if she was given a Famethyst arc instead on focusing on the controversial human zoo.

Animation and character models are also inconsistent. Lapis and BD looked like they swallowed glutathione. Peridot appears largely disproportioned.

        Man, everyone misses Season 1.

Spoken as someone who is not yet old enough to form his own rational opinions or detach himself from “fanthink”, nor able to write critique worth reading. There are things to be said about the quality and pacing of current Steven Universe compared to the first couple of seasons, but you missed every nail. Go back to tumblr where the other 14 year olds can give you likes.

Hate to say it, but I am starting to concede that Season 4 has been a bit flat. No real standout arcs and the big epsiodes have been standalones like Know Your Fusion, Mindful Education, and Last One Out of Beach City.

Steven is over-emotional (to the point of gullability in the case of Onion Friend), and I’m still a bit let down about the Cluster and Malachite’s mismanagement, even if it sprung the Lapidot thread and Jasper becoming a really neat villain.

Show is still solid on the technical merits, but I do wish things revved up a bit.

To be fair, I didn’t even know there was a new Clarence until it was on. They really need to advertise better.
