Ken and GC13 discuss House Guest, the episode that had the unfortunate duty of following Ocean Gem (let’s face it: not the easiest episode to follow).
Coming after a big episode wasn’t House Guest‘s only problem though: it seems to have a more basic cartoon plot than most episodes of Steven Universe. Plus, apparently, people don’t respond well to Pearl wiping oil off of herself.
It’s still nice to see some father-sun bonding though, which means that Greg is forgiven for interrupting Pearl’s history lesson. When Steven will get his healing spit back, nobody knows, but it sure was impactful while it lasted, wasn’t it?

Hey guys can I just say I love your podcast and I love you all! look at Sophia Haven’t you Noticed that she’s A Star. The there’s Hunter and he’s Stronger Than You! But then there’s GC13 and he’s Strong in the Real Way! We can’t forget about Dakota he’s bringing peace and love to the planet earth. And last but certainly not least there is ken and he may not always agree but he is still a Comet living his Destiny! Thank you all for being as cool as a cookie cat
You da real mvp homie
I speak truth though XD
what do you plan to do when you run out of retro episodes to talk about?

Well it won’t be long now. Second looks at a lot of episodes, I’m sure, but before we get there we’ll probably do some more podcast episodes about things other than Steven Universe episodes.
I wonder how times the LSS will loop through the series by the time everything ends. My guess is 3.

That would be impressive. At twenty-six episodes a year the show could keep us going for quite a while. Even if they do nothing but bombs, it would take a while to do another loop.
But looping gets old. We might have to actually start thinking of topics. 😛
What do you mean? It’s main plot was I guess seen before but the undertone was that Greg wanted to live with his son again after Steven went to live with the Crystal Gems (Presumably when he was 8) he’s probably lonely in-between visits.

Plot, not premise. Ken and I elaborate on our feelings in the episode, but the basic idea is that House Guest felt like it could have been an episode of a run-of-the-mill cartoon and that usually doesn’t happen on Steven Universe.
It fits in logically, considering how Steven lives away Greg leaving him all alone in a little van by a car wash.
While this episode isn’t one of the stronger ones, I still like the song Dear Old Dad. It starts off a little rough, but by the end, when Steven and Greg are harmonizing, it’s really touching.
Now that we know what the Cluster is, my theory still stands that the Geode is a some kind of Gem weapon, possibly an bomb that didn’t go off properly. The crater it sits in even looks like the result of a meteor. The weird thing is though, why would there be a warp pad be built near it? Was the warp pad built after the war to monitor the Geode?
As for how the duct tape worked, my theory is that Steven’s Healing Spit is actually a placebo effect, meaning that he doesn’t actually need to use spit to heal, and just like his shield, it’s the emotion behind the action that manifests the power. Perhaps his love for this dad caused his “healing power” to be channeled through the tape?
So I’m surprised by the mention that one of the boarders confirmed that Steven should’ve been able to heal the Geode, because I came up with a theory circa C&R that Steven’s spit could only heal things that are alive, which is why it couldn’t do the Geode or the warp pad. Completely separately, I later discovered that someone else also has this theory: Steven himself! In the book The Guide to the Crystal Gems, Steven says something like “I don’t know, maybe it only works on living things.” [When I get home I’ll try to remember to post the page number and exact quote if no one else already has done so]
On another note, we got a much more subtle and nonspecific example of Pearl’s aversion to Greg in “Coach Steven”:
Greg: “Hey Pearl, come here to check out some buff studs?”
Pearl: [looks up and down at Greg] “… No.”
